Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It fits best where the exterior is meant to last a generation. Cedar that has outlived its stain cycle, dated steel or hardboard siding, a remodel where the outside should match the money spent inside, a wish for a painted-wood look without repainting every few years, and any worry about fire, woodpeckers, or rot all point to fiber cement. It is heavier and costs more than vinyl, so it makes the most sense on a house you plan to keep.

Seven steps, most of them shared with every other re-side, plus the manufacturer's own rules. We settle the board style and color at a free in-home consultation, then send a written estimate and pull the permit. The old siding comes off and rotten boards are replaced. A weatherproof layer goes over the wall for Bloomington or your city to inspect. Then the boards go up with metal behind every joint and the gaps James Hardie requires above the roof and the ground. The general steps are on the siding page, and cut ends get sealed and touched up before we leave.

Finish and footage. Primed boards you paint on site cost less than ColorPlus boards with the factory-baked finish, and from there the square footage, the number of stories, shingle or panel accents, trim, stripping the old siding, and any rot found underneath set the number. Fiber cement sits above vinyl on price and recouped about 114 percent of its cost at resale nationally in the 2025 Cost vs. Value report.

It is made for them. The HZ5 line sold here is engineered for freezing, wet climates, with a surface that resists shrinking, swelling, and cracking through freeze-thaw, and the board itself will not burn, rot, or feed woodpeckers. James Hardie publishes no hail rating, so we do not claim one, and its ColorPlus finish carries a fifteen-year finish warranty from the maker. Homeowners who want something lighter on tall walls often look at LP SmartSide instead.

Plan on one to two weeks for a typical house. The boards are heavier and every cut is made with dust control, so it runs a little slower than vinyl. ColorPlus boards are kept warm and dry before they go up, and we wait out a deep cold snap rather than hang boards in it. The written estimate carries a timeline for your house.
