Replace it when the problem is the whole wall rather than one spot. Material first, then the house itself. Vinyl sits at the lower end and James Hardie fiber cement at the upper end, with engineered wood and steel between them. From there the square footage, the number of stories, how much old siding has to come off, any rotten wood found underneath, and whether trim, soffit, or added insulation are part of the project all set the final figure.

Steel and thicker vinyl take hail best, and every material here needs to move with the temperature. Vinyl expands and shrinks close to half an inch over a long run between January and July, so the nails are left slightly loose on purpose and each panel can slide as it moves.
